Statement

As an artist raised in a Hindu family deeply rooted in Indian religious culture and customs, I have long been attracted to the power of myth, and specifically Indian mythology, its continued importance to daily life. I believe ancient mythology remains pertinent even today through ever-evolving interpretation. Inspired by my conviction, I am continuously driven to explore—through painting, sculpture, and related media—the relationship between mythology and contemporary life and use my practice to further reinterpret Indian mythology, at times even creating my own personal mythology through my artworks. My goal is to cultivate the power of mythology that relates one life to another, one culture to another and even past to present. Through my art, I am trying to find my place in the continuous philosophical journey of humanity.
Indian mythology is deeply ingrained in my identity. The religious stories I heard from my grandmother, which as a child I misunderstood to be true; the pictures and idols of the deities at home in their own little shrines, and the rituals of worshiping of them every day—these events overtime had established their presence in my mind as real historical characters. Through my painting, I reconstruct and reconstitute those characters, and displace them in a setting of my own creation. The compositions of my paintings juxtapose these characters with trivial everyday objects, inspires to demystify the iconographic idols and simultaneously in the same process, forces a reinterpretation of the everyday objects.
